Installing and running the ZXTM Desktop Edition

This article explains how to install and run Zeus Desktop Edition. If you haven't installed your virtualization software and downloaded the Zeus Desktop Edition, please follow the instructions in Step 1 - Download the Zeus Desktop Edition.

Installing the Zeus Desktop Edition virtual machine

Installation and configuration proceeds as follows:

  • Extract the files in the installation .zip package to a convenient location;

  • Create and configure a Virtual Machine from the disk image or VMware OVF file in the installation package, paying particular attention to the networking configuration;

  • Start the virtual machine, accept the license agreement and take a note of the configuration URL displayed once it has booted;

  • Point a web browser at the URL and access the administration interface; install a license key and then proceed with the Zeus Desktop Edition exercises.

The Installation Guide describes this process in detail for the various virtualization platforms.

Start the Zeus Desktop Edition up

The first time that you start the Desktop Edition up, you will be shown a license agreement. Click on the console window and press 'return' to page through the agreement; type 'yes' if you agree to its terms.

  • Note: The console window may take mouse focus; to release it, press 'Ctrl-Alt' in VMware, the right 'Alt' key in Microsoft Virtual Server or the right 'Ctrl' key with VirtualBox.

Take a note of the URL for the admin interface. It will be displayed in the console window like this:

  • Note: If the Desktop Edition software could not contact a DHCP server, it will display an error message indicating that it could not acquire an IP address. Please refer to the Installation Guide for troubleshooting and recommendations.

You can now minimize the VMware Player or Server window, close the XenCenter window, minimize the VirtualBox window, or leave the Virtual Server website.

Access the Admin interface using a web browser, and log in using the username 'admin', password 'admin':

Obtain a license key

The Administration Interface will prompt you to upload a license key for the Zeus software. You can download a license key from the Downloads pages on www.zeus.com (opens in new window).

Once you have downloaded and installed your license key, you can proceed to the next article - Using Zeus Desktop Edition - which contains a number of worked examples to help you understand and use Zeus Traffic Manager.
